Do you use dominance-based training?
No.
We practice relational leadership rooted in clarity, consistency, and regulation through the use of assertive energy and affection. Our work focuses on restoring structure and safety rather than overpowering behaviour. Only calm and emotionally regulated humans can make good dog mothers.
Do you use purely positive methods?
Affection given the way a Mother Dog loves her puppies is the only pure positive reinforcement. Treats are bribery. The dog does not do as you ask for ‘you’, they do it for the ‘treat’. Many dogs who know all of their commands still struggle with behavioural problems because the dog does not care about food when they are in a hightened, high energy, or alert state of mind. You will never see a treat make a dog calm and relaxed. At minimum a treat makes a dog alert, the opposite of calm and relaxed. Yet, you can put a dog to sleep just by giving the dog affection the way their Mother dog did.
We use balanced, assertive, and ethical interventions grounded in calm correction or redirection and emotional steadiness. We believe boundaries create safety, and safety creates behavioural change. The dog no longer feels responsible for protecting itself from anything.
What makes your approach different?
I am the Only Dog Expert in the world who talks about being the Mother Dog and licking your dog’s neck gently with your fingertips to give them affection to simulate the Mother Dog licking their neck. This is the magic touch that teaches a dog to regulate their emotions and nervous system.
Why? Because in that moment they look up and see a human who completely represents the love, leadership, calmness, courage, strength, and protectiveness, and speaks the unspoken language of their Mother Dog, and for the first time since they were taken from their Mother Dog, they feel completely safe and protected. They no longer have to be on alert for danger because there is a Mother Dog right next to them doing it for them. No longer worried about anything, their mind calms, their body relaxes, and they fall asleep while feeling gentle and loving licks from their Mother Dog. For many of these dogs, that calm and affectionate moment with me is the first time they have slept solid since they left their Mother Dog. It is a truly amazing moment. ❤️
When a leader remains grounded, predictable, and clear, dogs no longer feel the need to escalate or control their environment.
Why might my dog not be accepted into the program?
Our rehabilitation model is pack-based. Some behavioural presentations involve levels of risk that require a different setting.
Our responsibility is to protect:
- The dogs already in care
- Our staff
- Visiting families
- And your dog
If we determine that another level of intervention is needed, we will say so with honesty and care.
Do you believe in “alpha” theory?
The Alpha theory is correct, but the mechanism by which it operates in a pack, the current theory has wrong.
There is a lot of confusion about what Alpha means because we use the same word to describe two different things,
- The level of dominance or confidence you were born with – who you are.
- Your position in the hierarchy of the pack – what you are.
See our – Who VS What post for a full explaination.
Can severe aggression always be rehabilitated?
Every dog deserves a thoughtful and educated assessment. However, not all behavioural patterns are rooted in fear or relational imbalance. We can not save all dogs, but we do try to save as many as we can, who deserve our understanding.
Some cases involve neurological or predatory components that require specialized intervention beyond the scope of any training ideology and way beyond the ability of the average dog owner. These are the Apex dominant dogs, especially Apex Alphas. Although these dogs can learn how to socialize properly, play properly, and to be respectful during our rehabilitation program, those lessons will be forgotten if they are not consistently enforced and managed. These dogs tend to revert back to their original aggressive behaviours once authority and leadership are removed. Only in cases of extreme, consistent and repetitive aggression causing physical harm should a dog be considered for behavioural euthanasia. These dogs are very rare.
Clarity protects everyone involved.
